Is it bad to wear blue light glasses all day?

Blue light glasses have become a popular tool to protect the eyes from the invisible yet blue-violet light projected by the sun as the main source and digital screens. While this is certainly handy, what about when you’re not looking at a screen?

If they were created for screen usage, then is it bad to wear blue light glasses all day?

While it’s true that a blue light lens coating is helpful for reducing blue-violet light exposure, wearing them outside of screen use is encouraged, because the sun is the main source. Below, we address the extended wear of blue light glasses and explain why it’s okay to rock them all. Day. Long.

Can you wear blue light glasses all day?

Yes, you can wear blue light glasses all day and experience no adverse effects whatsoever. As mentioned, the blue light coating is subtle and accommodates most vision correction levels. It can easily be applied to your “everyday” glasses.

Blue light glasses are useful for those who spend a lot of time in front of a screen, whether for work or entertainment. People with limited screen time can still benefit from them. Including a blue light filtering coating on your glasses is safe for all-day, everyday use.

When to wear blue light glasses

The whole point of the blue light lens coating is to reduce the amount of blue-violet light your eyes are exposed to from the sun and digital screens. So, the best time to wear blue light glasses is when you’re exposed to blue-violet light — i.e., when you’re exposed to sunlight and while you’re watching TV, scrolling through your smartphone or tablet, or working on a computer.

The slightly yellow-tinted coating on the lenses counteracts the blue-violet light. As a result, the amount of blue-violet light that reaches your retinas (in the back of the eyes) is minimized and provides you with more protection and comfortable screen viewing.

With that said, blue light glasses are fine to be worn even when you’re not exposed to digital screens (which is rare these days). As stated before, a blue light coating can only help you — wearing blue light glasses all the time won’t hurt your eyes.
