Blue light filtering glasses: Protect your eyes from harmful light

Reviewed by Dr. Justin Asgarpour

Blue light filtering glasses shield your eyes from UV and harmful blue light, indoors and outdoors. They filter out the bad while letting in the good, which helps protect your eyes for the long term. Add blue light glasses to any frames to maintain your eye health whenever you work on your laptop, scroll through your phone, or spend time outside.

What’s the difference between
harmful and beneficial light?

Blue light is all around us – the main source is the sun, which also exposes us to harmful UV light. Digital screens (like whatever you’re using to read this now) also emit harmful blue light, as do other sources like fluorescent and LED lights.

Blue light is sometimes called blue-violet light or violet light. It’s high-energy visible light in the wavelength of 380-500 nm (the light that humans can see), while ultraviolet (UV) light rays are higher-energy ‘invisible’ light in the shorter wavelength of 100-400nm that’s just beyond our perception.

Potential health risks associated with UV light include cancer, cataracts, and other conditions such as keratitis, ocular surface disease, pterygium, and pinguecula. Harmful blue light can cause retinal cell damage, sleep disruption, and eye-fatigue. Beneficial blue light helps us see better – it enhances clarity, contrast, and colour perception. It also regulates our sleep and waking schedules, to keep our circadian rhythm in check.

Coastal's blue light protection lenses BlueReflect™ filter out UV and harmful blue light while allowing beneficial blue light to pass through, so you can see clearly and comfortably while protecting your eyes indoors and outdoors.

What to expect when you wear
blue light filtering lenses

Coastal's blue light protection lenses BlueReflect™ can be added to any glasses frames, with or without a prescription, so you can rely on protection from UV and harmful blue light indoors, outdoors, and wherever your day takes you.

Depending on light exposure, there may sometimes be a slight, blue reflection on the front of the lenses. It’s a very subtle effect that doesn’t get in the way of your vision (it just means the lenses are doing their job!).

The lens technology that fights blue light gives BlueReflect™ lenses a slight, yellow tint, which creates a warmer colour perception compared to ordinary lenses. It’s a very subtle effect, but it’s worth bearing in mind if you’re participating in activities that require very detailed attention to colour.

You can wear blue light protection glasses for casual driving, but if you spend long hours on the road at night it’s ideal to wear clear lens with C Shield coating to ensure you have optimum clarity and can help your eyes combat glare.

Top 3 FAQs about blue
light blocking lenses

Yes, these specialized lenses, BlueReflect™ and BlueReflect Plus™, from Coastal are similar to clear lenses, but they have an additional benefit to protect your eyes from UV and harmful blue light by filtering harmful light both indoors and outdoors.

Harmful blue light can cause retinal cell damage, sleep disruption, and eye fatigue. UV light is dangerous for our eyes and can cause problems, including cancer and cataracts.

You may notice a very slight yellow tint in your BlueReflect™ lenses if placed against a white background — this is completely normal and comes from the embedded filter in the lenses.

Our BlueReflect™ lenses can be worn any time you like, but as night vision is slightly improved with blue light, we recommend using a secondary pair of clear lenses when driving at night for the absolute best vision.

Unlike regular glasses, BlueReflect™ lenses protect your eyes from UV and harmful blue light. They help reduce eyestrain, for added comfort during heavy screen time, and filter out harmful light when you’re outside. You can add blue light lenses to any frames, with or without a prescription, and wear them throughout your regular routine.
