We had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Sarah Gibson, the designer and founder of IWEARTHEHEADRESS. Inspired by Coachella and the ultimate California girl, Sarah’s designs feature vibrant colors and playful prints – not to mention she hand makes each and every piece! As a lover of stylish eyewear, Sarah also took some time to style a few of her favorite head dresses by pairing them with the perfect eyeglasses.
Name: Sarah Gibson
Business Name: IWEARTHEHEADRESS | @iweartheheadress
How did you come up with the name? In high school I became obsessed with Coachella and the California girl idea. A lot of the girls wore head dresses to the festival so IWEARTHEHEADRESS was born and used as my Myspace name – I know, I know, Myspace right?
Why did you start IWEARTHEHEADRESS? I didn’t go into this with the idea of making profit, nor did I think it would turn into a business. I made a headpiece for myself and I was asked by friends to make them the same – I started an Instagram account to make it easier for people to see what I was making and I had a really great response. Eleven months later I am just about to reach 10K followers and have had over 2000 sales!
Did you have sewing experience prior to? I took sewing for a year in high school but really struggled with the patience side of it. When I want to create something I tend to just do it instead of planning ahead. I’ve learned that trial and error works best for me and I am constantly growing as an individual and as a business because of this.
How many would you say you’ve made to date? I’ve sold over 2000 and made around 3000. I could make them in my sleep!
What has been the biggest challenge so far? The biggest challenge has been navigating the business aspect of running my own business. I have no business background, so everything from branding to accounting is a foreign concept to me and I’ve been fortunate enough to have Frieda and family who offer their time and services to help me out!
What can customers expect from you this summer? The Summer Collection is filled with really beautiful prints and some new pieces including kimonos and beach bags! I have 2 turbans that are an IWEARTHEHEADRESS exclusive fabric, designed by Luis Lopa and Lady Noel who happen to be my favorite artists.
Do you see you the business expanding into other markets in online fashion retail? I am working towards having a Summer 2015 Collection of not only head pieces but several pieces of apparel as well. Dresses, rompers, and of course, kimonos again.
You recently collaborated with Luis Lopa. How did you like the collaboration process? Luis is a good friend of my fiancé and mine so when I brought up the idea of collaborating on some projects he (amazingly) was into it! We have three Luis Lopa originals in our home and we try to go to most of his shows in Vancouver. He is so talented and the collaboration process was a breeze with him.
Do you foresee more collaborations in the near future with other artists or more pieces with Luis? Definitely. I would love to continue this collaboration with Luis into 2015 and beyond. I am also collaborating with Lady Noel in Miami, Florida (another color genius) and for Fall I will be working with Jordy of Likely Baby Story to bring in an exclusive Fall/Winter print.
What’s your favorite social media platform to market on and why? Instagram. Instagram. Instagram. It has allowed me to market my product worldwide with the use of hashtags, giveaways, and word of mouth! I’ve shipped to over 15 countries now and am always making new connections with some amazing women in business, fashion bloggers and fashion lovers.
What’s the one piece of advice you’d have for somebody looking to start up a similar business? Never do anything with half your heart, you’ll know when it’s the right time to start up and if you dream about it and would rather work on it than watching a movie or going out, it’s yours and it’s time!
How would you describe your style? My style is easy. I love neutrals and my closet is pretty bland, but I shop for quality and great pieces that won’t be out of style in 6 months. I like to add color with my accessories – a vintage bag, bright sunnies, patterned shoes or a fun scarf.
What’s your favorite article of clothing right now? My favorite article of clothing right now is a black jersey romper from Urban Outfitters. It’s the easiest piece to transition me into summer. I wore it with boots and a leather jacket, and can’t wait to wear it with sandals, sunnies, and of course an IWEARTHEHEADRESS kimono.
Heels or flats? Flats! I’ve worn heels maybe five times in my 22 years and I think four of them were as a child playing dress up.
Tell us about your glasses style… I love Nina Ricci glasses. The gold rim is so perfect because they’re light enough so I don’t feel like I’m wearing glasses and the gold is still bold enough to make them noticeable to others!
What do you notice trending for spring/summer? Mixed prints are big and one of my favorites; think stripes with floral prints. Another trend is crochet and lace. Really feminine and delicate pieces are making a comeback. Goodbye low rise denim and tube tops!
Out of those trends which ones are you into and which ones are you not digging at all? I love them all! Usually there is one or two trends I’m not big on, but this season I’m loving everything!
Who’s your go to celebrity for style inspiration? Beyonce.
Why do you like wearing glasses? I like wearing glasses when I’m working which is conveniently when I need them. No matter how tired I’m feeling, they’re always a nice pick me up and make me feel like I have control of whatever situation I’m in. I guess they’re the power piece in my wardrobe.
