We had the pleasure of sitting down with Derek Desierto, the man behind the Derek Cardigan eyeglasses brand.
Derek began his design career in Vancouver, Canada with a growing fascination in vintage style. His first eyeglasses collection, Derek Cardigan F/W 2010, was inspired by glasses icons Woody Allen and Rivers Cuomo from the band Weezer. This collection launched the Derek Cardigan brand into the world of eyeglasses fashion by showcasing Derek’s irresistible joie de vivre philosophy on fashion and life.
Q. Okay, tell us your first eyeglasses memory…
A. Ever since I was a kid I wanted glasses, so much so that in grade 6 I would read my Archie comics in the dark hoping this would ruin my eyesight. When this didn’t work, I went directly to plan B and lied during my eye exam (sorry mom!). That’s how I got my first pair of glasses.
Q. Who’s your ultimate eyeglasses icon?
A. It’s between Woody Allen and Rivers Cuomo from Weezer. I love Woody for his films; I love Rivers for his music. And I’ve always aligned my style and personality with these guys.
Q. Why do you think more and more people are wearing glasses today?
A. Because we’re always staring at computer screens which isn’t exactly great for our eyes… ha! But really, I think more and more people are wearing glasses because it’s a great accessory that is the exclamation point to your whole look!
Q. What is your approach to your personal style?
A. I have pretty much made a uniform for myself. It’s a dress shirt, slacks, sweater and glasses. I figured out what works for me and I just stick to it.
Q. If you could share one style tip, what would it be?
A. Know what works for you and don’t be a slave to all those trends.
Q. When was your first Derek Cardigan sighting?
A. I actually first saw a girl wearing a pair of Derek Cardigan eyeglasses on the bus when I was heading home from work. At first, I didn’t realize they were my design, until I saw the math symbols! Of course once I realized, I couldn’t help but smile.
Q. Is there anything you never leave the house without?
A. My cell phone.
Q. What can we expect from you next?
A. Well, definitely more vintage inspired styles with more fun colors. I’m really excited about my next collection and I can’t wait to show you guys.
Q. Any parting words Mr. Desierto?
A. Stay classy!
