After hosting the world’s top athletes for 16 consecutive days of grueling competition, it was time to let loose and celebrate thanks to the long list of stars and great pop names at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics.
Fingers were crossed for sightings of Olympic worthy eyeglasses style on the world stage, but alas there were slim pickings. So to pay homage to this historical moment, we picked out the top eyeglasses styles that these pop stars missed out on.
From hosting Britain’s newest pop phenomenon, One Direction, to the UK’s always beloved Spice Girls, there was no shortage of fashion standouts throughout the night. The Closing Ceremony also played host to a parade of supermodels, which included Britain’s Naomi Campbell, strutting to Fashion by David Bowie.
Young artists such as One Direction and Emeli Sande mixed tradition with modern style. The young gentlemen of One Direction paired tailored suits and pocket squares with brighter than white athletic shoes. Emeli Sande, whose song “Diamond Rings” was given top 10 status on the UK Singles Chart, took to the stage with a bold bleached hair style featuring a classic 40’s curl front and center but with a shaved undercut.
Vibrant colors and fluro style were in full effect across the spectrum of entertainment with the 90’s comeback of Fatboy Slim, electric orange sported by The Pet Shop Boys and the bright yellow military-style jacket featured in the flashback clip of Freddie Mercury.
And then there was the one-night-only reunion of Britain’s coveted pop sensation, the Spice Girls. The ladies took the stage wearing a new take on their iconic concert costumes. Each was lively in apparel that was true to their distinct personalities. Victoria Beckham’s classic black strapless dress, designed by Giles Beacon, featured subtle details at the waist, while Melanie B. was embellished from head-to-toe in gold Zuhair Murad.
