The Inside Scoop

Name and Occupation…

Jhon Jairo Santos – Fashion Director at Metrovelvet.com and Contributor writer for L’Officiel Italia.

By day you can find me…

At my desk working.

And by night…

I spend a lot of time in Miami during the year. During weekdays I don’t go out that much around the city, but I do have my favorite spots to visit during weekends, specially at night. I recently discovered one of my current favorite spots, The Regent Club Bar at The Gale hotel in South Beach. I love the place and its classic ambiance. Their cocktail menu is fantastic, and their exquisite selection of cocktails changes each weekend within different themes related to cultures and decades. I also love their music selection – it’s always great!

When I’m in New York, for dinner and drinks I like to pass by Acme Downstairs located at 9 Great Jones Street. I also like Pravda at 281 Lafayette St. New York is different, I feel I could be everywhere at night. I love late nights in New York. There’s something about the mystery of the city at night that I crave.

Three things I must have in my work space…

1.  An agenda

2. A good pen

3. Good lighting

For creative inspiration, I…

Spend quite time looking through old books I have. I have an endless fascination for fashion and art, so the Internet is my go-to Encyclopedia when it comes to that. Sometimes I spend time watching videos from old designer collections on YouTube. I recently have been re-watching videos from Helmut Lang and Calvin Klein collections from the late 80’s and early 90’s on repeat. I’m captivated by how the clothes still feel relevant and how their philosophy with minimalism changed completely the way we see clothes today. Also, right now I’m into a Bauhaus and constructivist art state-of-mind. Perhaps because I’m currently reading Josef Albers’ Study of Color after I read an article about him on Dazed and Confused digital.

If I could turn back time and live in a different era, I’d choose the…

70’s – I crave for those sociocultural revolutionary days.

If I could raid anyone’s closet, I’d raid ____ and take ____…

No one’s closet and take nothing because I simply don’t ever dream of having what somebody else have.

My favorite season for fashion is…

Definitely winter.

I’m most proud of…

All the things that I have achieved these past 5 years.

The book I couldn’t put down was…

The Story of Ann Quinlan – It was an old book that my mom had, and I read it when I was 9 or 10 years old. I probably became shocked with the story as I was too young at that time to understand certain things. But at the same time, I sort of built this fascination for American culture and the liberal things young people were doing during the 70’s. I found it shockingly brave and fantastic in some ways.

A quote that has always stuck with me…

“The urge to destroy is also a creative urge” by Pablo Picasso

My go-to accessory is…

Always sunglasses.

Glasses style I can’t get enough of…

A pair of vintage Ray-Ban aviators from the 70’s that I have from my grandfather and a pair of vision sunglasses with rounded shape in tortoiseshell frame.

Even though I don’t have any vision problems, I like glasses. I found them captivating, plus adding to the fact that you could wear them at any place at any time, indoors or outdoors.

One thing that really bonds with me and these two pairs of Derek Cardigan rounded frames is that they’re soft and not too stiff or heavy. The fit is incredible, plus they offer a timeless touch to my style. My favorites are the tortoiseshell ones – they go with everything. I wear the black frames when I’m in the mood for all black. Well, somehow navy, white and black have been my dressing options lately. I might go back to colorful clothes soon though!
