Trend Report: We Love the 90′s
What’s old is new again, and no decade has made a bigger comeback in 2013 than the 1990′s. From the Supermodels of the era revving back to the front of major fashion magazines around the world, to Hedi Slimane’s Grunge influenced collection at Saint Laurent, 90′s fashion is a trend that is here to stay. Glasses shapes, materials and patterns can reflect your favorite look from the era, with a modern twist.
The supermodels of the era ushered in a new form of celebrity, becoming household names and creating brands out of their looks. With designers such as Gianni Versace showcasing their style in his infamous ‘safety pin’ dresses, the supers made no apologies for their wild lifestyles and sexy style. Gold accents, animal print patterns and ultra-feminine styles are showcased in glasses trends for 2013 and will suit your inner supermodel.
On the other end of the spectrum, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and model Jourdan Dunn are just some of the celebrities bringing back the athletic favorites of the 1990′s, including a devotion to the Michael Jordan era Chicago Bulls. Wearing a basketball jersey as a dress, throwing on a team cap and a great pair of sneakers is ideal for this casual style. Spike Lee, a fashion influencer of the era, was known to pair his team wears with his now iconic thick glasses. A great pair of aviator glasses or sports-inspired shape is the ultimate accessory for this look.
Grunge is one of the 1990′s most identifiable trends, with Seattle’s music scene dominating MTV and the airways in the early part of the decade, mainly due to the massive success of bands that included Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The laid-back style features layers of clothing, mix matched patterns and functional staples such as warm flannels and sturdy boots. Continuing its vintage-inspired theme, thicker, bolder glasses reflect Grunge’s laid back appeal.
With the introduction of Carolyn Bessette and John F Kennedy Jr’s wedding photo, the 1990′s saw the explosion of one of its most enduring trends, Minimalism. Calvin Klein and Carolyn’s dress designer, Narciso Rodriguez, were early champions of the look that stripped down the ornate excess of the 1980′s and the first part of the decade, and championed clean lines, solid neutral colors and sparse accessories. Streamlined, timeless glasses shapes won’t distract if your looking for a more simplistic style.
