Complementing BBS
People-Based Safety, the "person-based approach to safety training, complements the behavior-based approach
that focuses on behavior analysis. "BBS has been in operation for four or five years, and we pointed out that People-Based
Safety, is not a replacement," Pecoraro says. "It will enhance BBS and they will work together." Employees
use BBS to observe the behavior of their co-workers and record examples of safe and at risk behavior. The People-Based
Safety system "takes it to another level," Skytta says. "It gets employees to think about what they're doing, and
why they're doing it."
Personal Approach
People-Based Safety takes a personal approach to employee safety by focusing on employee thoughts
and attitudes as well as behavior. "Applying People-Based Safety skills helps them think through things
and try to figure out why they're doing what they're doing," Skytta says. People-Based Safety features
four key skill areas-Acting, Coaching, Thinking and Seeing. "They combine to advance safe thought and behavior
on a personal level, with every employee motivated to achieve," Pecoraro says.
Injury Prevention
By motivating employees to think about the way they work, People-Based Safety prevents a variety of injuries,
including slips, trips and falls, lockout/tagout, forklift and moving parts," according to Pecoraro. "The coaching
skill is very important here, because it tells us to look out for each other and ourselves," he says.
Flexible courseware
Users of People-Based Safety can rework the material to make it more relevant to their employees. "We
rewrote the lesson plans to help our trainers work through the modules," Pecoraro says. "We changed some of the questions to
focus on activites specifically geared to our facility, such as wearing gloves and the PPE that's used in our plant."
Appealing format
The People-Based Safety approach combines instruction with active participation, with trainers lecturing,
playing DVDs and engaging the group in dialogue. "The sessions were very lively," Skytta says. "There was a lot of good
response from employees."
Employee feedback
Every employee who completed People-Based Safety training provided original comments:
·"It made me think of safety in a different, more   personal way."
·"It focused a lot on what starts a behavior and it gave   me a better understanding of what may be happening
  behind the scenes."
·"It identified areas of safety I had not thought about   before, very practical."
·"It was informal and allowed us to talk openly."
·"Sharing of personal experiences was a highlight of   the training."
Results
135 employees completed the People-Based Safety training and they believe all accidents can be prevented.
"We have passed one million man-hours without an away from work case, and People-Based Safety helps ensure
our accident-free record," Pecoraro says.
